A traditional Swiss chalet offering Bed and Breakfast, Self catering or fully catered accommodation. The chalet is situated in an elevated position overlooking the village of Evolène, in the Val d'Hérens. It enjoys wonderful views of the village, the mountains and the Ferpècle glacier. It is a real home, with quality furniture, beautiful soft furnishings, interesting original artwork and quirky objets d'art.
The Chalet occupies the upper two floors of the building. It has 3 bedrooms (2 twins and one double), 2 modern bathrooms, a large lounge/dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. Beautiful views can be enjoyed from the terrace and two south facing balconies.
We live in the ground floor apartment all year around and are always available to answer any questions, give advice or make suggestions on what to do in the area.
Evolène is an authentic Swiss village, where traditional farming life continues today as it has for centuries. Visitors are drawn to the area by the charm of the local festivals, the scenery and the many activities available in both summer and winter.

"Le plus beau village de Suisse Romande 2012" (L'Illustré)
Walking through the tiny streets and jumble of ancient chalets which make up the centre of Evolène can be a bit like going back in time. But against this backdrop of tradition and local day to day life Evolène offers everything the traveller or holiday maker should need. There are a number of small shops (fruit and veg, local produce, bakers, gift shops) as well as an excellent outdoor shop, the post office, bank with cash machine and pharmacy.
Ten minutes walk from the chalet is a very well stocked Coop supermarket. There are eight restaurants and bars, some with lovely outside terraces where it is very easy to while away a few hours over drinks or lunch.
In case of emergency there are two doctors and a dentist. The tourist office is near the middle of the village and is staffed by very friendly, helpful (some English speaking) people. Each week there is a diary of events published by the tourist office, detailing local festivals, concerts and other activities, for example a trip up to the alpage (the high pastures) to visit the local cows and watch the speciality cheese being made.
Ski or snowboarding lessons can be booked with the local ski school and all winter sport equipment can be hired at the outdoor shop. This includes the equipment for cross country ski ing (ski de fond) which can be practised along the 60km of superbly prepared piste along the riverside and around Evolène and Les Haudères. For experienced scramblers with a head for heights, Evolène has its own Via Ferrata. Again the necessary equipment can be hired locally.
A little bit about Judith and Mike
We are Judith and Mike Hawtree and we hope you enjoy finding out more about our chalet and the beautiful Evolène region that we are so lucky to call our home.
We met in the Italian Dolomites in the summer of 2004, where Judith was working as a chalet host for Collett's Mountain Holidays and Mike was a guest. In 2005 Mike's job with Nestlé brought him to Switzerland for a year, at the end of which he decided to stay permanently. We set up home in a small apartment with a wonderful view over Lac Leman, but soon started looking around for a chalet to call our own. Judith spent the summers in Evolène due to her job as Housekeeper and Cook for Martin Moran Mountaineering, who based their summer Alpine courses here.
After a long time searching and waiting, our dream came true when we were able to buy Chalet Les Criquets. We spent two years modernising the chalet, including two new bathrooms, a new heating system and a complete renovation of the ground floor apartment. It has been quite an experience working alongside the local tradesmen!
We very much enjoy welcoming people into our home, sharing our local knowledge to help them make the most of their time here. The evenings are especially enjoyable with good food and wine and lively conversation around the dinner table.
Our aim is to provide a cosy, comfortable and relaxed environment where everyone can feel at home.
This superb video, courtesy of sr-prod.com, gives you an aerial view of the Evolène and Arolla valleys in winter.
Evolène is easily reached via excellent rail and road links
By Public Transport:
From Geneva airport - take the Brig train as far as Sion. Trains are approximately every 30 mins and take almost exactly 2 hours to reach Sion. From Sion train station take the Les Haudères/Arolla Postbus and get off at the stop called Evolène Village. There are buses throughout the day but the last bus is at 19:10.
We can pick up guests from the bus stop or, if required, Sion station by prior arrangement.
The road up the valley to Evolène from Sion is an easy 30 minute drive in both summer and winter. Take the autoroute Sion-Est exit and follow the Val d'Hérens signs. The road soon begins to climb and passes through several small villages before reaching Evolène.
We will send out more detailed instructions on how to find the chalet when bookings are confirmed.
Please note that it is possible to drive all the way to the chalet for unloading, but then the car must be parked in the parking area about 80 metres from the chalet. When snow is on the ground it is not possible to drive to the chalet. We will be here to help you carry your luggage.
