The Valais is the sunniest area in Switzerland. To be high on the slopes here in the Val d'Herens surrounded by very few people, pure mountain air, blue skies, warm sunshine, amazing views of gleaming 4000m peaks is a special experience. The Evolène Region has 100km of downhill pistes, 60 km of marked and pisted ski de fond (Nordic cross country skiing), 25 km of marked snowshoeing trails and 60 km of winter walking trails.
There is the opportunity for the more adventurous to hire a fully qualified Guide for ski-touring or ice climbing on frozen waterfalls and glaciers.
Evolène itself has a beautiful ski area with wonderful views over to the Dent Blanche and Matterhorn and is reached by a long peaceful scenic ride on the chair lift. The pistes are wide, full of variety and usually pretty quiet!
There may not be the glitz, glamour and lively nightlife of other more well known places, but the peace, the open space and lack of queues both here and in the other small resorts nearby, like Arolla and Nax, all help to create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere for a great days skiing.
For those who prefer the larger resorts, Crans Montana, Nendaz, Anzère, Ovronnaz and Grimentz are not far away. Even Verbier, Zermatt and Chamonix are easily accessible for a day trip.
Downhill skiing and boarding: As mentioned above, there are a number of resorts nearby, offering slopes for all abilities. Equipment hire is available in the village and there is an excellent ski school. We can book lessons for you if required.
Nordic cross country skiing: The pistes wind between the trees on both sides of the river between Evolène and Les Haudères. They are beautifully prepared for both the classical and skating techniques with different levels of distance and gradient.
Snowshoeing (Racquettes): There are at least 5 well marked circular routes available in the valley. It's a fantastic way to reach some of the higher villages, where you could enjoy a fondue or rösti on a sunny restaurant terrace.
Walking: You can enjoy many beautiful 'winter wonderland' walks along marked paths in the valley.
Ski-Touring: There are several recognised ski-touring routes for expert skiers. We can put you in touch with a qualified guide.
